Bankruptcy

Writer's picture: Justin BurkeJustin Burke

I bought a car from a buy here pay here car lot. A couple of weeks ago it broke down and would cost over $5,000 to fix it. I was at a loss for what to do. A Good friend of mine offered to help me. I told my friend I wanted to see what they had to offer me for a different car. They offered me a 13-year-old car for $14,000 before interest. At this point, I was at even more of a loss. I talked to my uncle and he told me to file bankruptcy. He then said you need a fresh start in life and it's okay to do so.

At this point, I was ashamed of not being able to pay my bills and what credit I had built would be gone. I then realized it's okay to admit defeat. I couldn't go on paying just the minimum payments anymore. I called a lawyer and asked for help. They said it's a lot of paperwork but in the end, it going to be okay.

I did take my friend up on that offer to help me get a car. I feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off me. After 5 years sober it sometimes is hard to accept help. But I can't hide behind feeling ashamed for anything in my life. I do have wonderful kids that I love and I need to show them you don't have to do everything alone in life. I just want to say thanks to everyone who has helped me on this journey to change my life around.
